A Son Pays Tribute to His Father’s Love of Wine

Some cellars are built to hold wine. This one was built to hold a memory.

The client came to us with a specific vision — and a specific inspiration. His father had built a cellar years ago in the 1980s to house the family’s collection. While his father had passed, and the family had long moved from that house, the memory of that cellar never left him. He wanted to rebuild it. Not as a replica, but as a tribute — to his father, and to a lifetime spent loving wine.

Project Overview

Old world wrought iron candle sconce reclaimed barnwood wine cellar Aldie Virginia

We started with reclaimed Virginia barnwood. Grey, weathered, textured by time — the kind of material that feels like it has a history before you ever touch it. Diamond bins anchor the feature wall. Individual bottle slots line every run. Ornate wrought iron candle sconces cast the same warm light you’d expect in a cellar that’s been there for decades.

A custom wrought iron entry gate frames the space the moment you come around the corner. The design was inspired by a gate found in England — then locally crafted and welded by the team at Nupen Welding. It is the first thing you see and it sets the tone for everything inside.

967 bottles. Passive conditioning. No mechanical unit — a space engineered to hold temperature the way the original cellar did years ago, that our clients father always enjoyed and brought many great family memories to all. When the project was finished, it didn’t look new. It looked like it had always been there. That was exactly the point.

Design and Planning

For this Aldie cellar, we started with a memory and worked backward to the architecture.

The initial design was rendered in 3D watercolor to give the client a true sense of scale, proportion, and material before a single board was cut. Diamond bins centered on the feature wall. Individual bottle slots flanking every run. Case storage at the base. The layout was engineered to maximize capacity within the space while honoring the feel of the original cellar that inspired it.

What you see built is what was designed. That’s not always the case in custom work — it is always the case at Classic Cellar Design.
